He is the first Anglophone President since the establishment of Rugby Africa. Currently, Mensah serves on the Executive Board of World Rugby as the representative for all regional associations, alongside the newly appointed Chairman, Brett Robinson.

He is a believer in the greater good of humanity and always seeks to push the status quo. An economist by training, Mensah honed his entrepreneurial skills while studying in the United Kingdom in the 1980’s which led to his pursuit of success in the telecommunications industry.

In the early nineties, he identified Cellular Telephony as a booming industry and went on to become the biggest mobile handset distributor in sub-Saharan Africa, outside of South Africa, where he led the market in distributing Motorola, Sony, Ericsson, and Nokia. By 2007, he had established a level 3 Motorola and Nokia-certified mobile phone and repair centre in Accra.

In 1994, he identified the opportunity of South African pay-TV broadcaster M-Net and helped to spread this service to the rest of Africa.

In addition to his business ventures, Mensah’s passion for sports led him to the coveted seat of Board Chairman of the popular Ghanaian football club Kumasi Asante Kotoko SC which was bestowed on him by the then Asantehene (the Monarch of the Ashanti Kingdom), Otumfuo Opoku Ware II in 1999. Mensah set out to restore the success of earlier glories of the then failing club by implementing a five-year plan, which included sponsorships, the introduction of professional training facilities, and a transparent financial approach to their financials. Herbert was elected President and Chairman of the Ghana Rugby Football Union in 2014. His tenure in office saw the Union attaining its World Rugby status. He has been instrumental in pushing the game of Rugby in the sub region. Alongside his various business and sports ventures, Herbert Mensah is also committed to making a difference in the lives of Ghanaians through his philanthropic work. He is the founder of the May 9th Foundation which seeks to offer support to families of victims of one of the biggest stadium disasters in Africa. In summary, Herbert Mensah is a visionary entrepreneur, an inspiring sports leader and devoted philanthropist with a strong passion for making a difference in Africa and beyond in his strive to “Move Africa Forward”.
